About The Nativity Preschool Program

Updated on Jun 12, 2023 10:52 AM by Towner, Cathy
The Nativity Preschool and Transitional Kindergarten programs mirror the Kindergarten philosophy of learning. We will work with parents to instill strong morals and values that parallel your own family values. Nativity is a school founded on the educational philosophy of Multiple Intelligences which embraces the understanding that we are all one- hundred percent intelligent who learn in diverse ways. Our strong Montessori curriculum and philosophy nurtures this philosophy by allowing each child to develop at their own pace.

We realize that all children learn in different ways and have different strengths and talents. The Preschool program will provide a stimulating Montessori based curriculum within a  Catholic environment.  We will engage children in learning as well as nurture and guide them to become the individuals God intended for them to be. Encouragement and positive reinforcement are used to allow individuals to develop and grow socially, emotionally and academically. To accomplish this in Preschool  three goals are emphasized:

Responsibility to Foster Confidence and Self Reliance:

Responsibility is demonstrated through personal actions and management of belongings. It is our goal as educators to begin teaching children to manage their personal belongings such as backpacks, snacks, classroom work, classroom material, etc. We also want to encourage self-reliance in students, guiding them to become more independent in themselves and the choices they make. The ability to take care of personal needs , such as toileting and hand washing are important in beginning the process of self reliance. Loving guidance from teachers is an important part of accomplishing this goal.

Respect to Promote Mutual Acceptance and Caring:

Respect in a classroom is shown by accepting and caring for others. Our students are together for many years and will come to know one another as an extension of their family unit. They should offer unconditional love, trust, and acceptance of each other. Our students learn to depend on and trust one another, as they take risks in their daily learning inside and outside of the classroom. There will be a time when each child will struggle with something, and they will have a friend to support and help them along the way. Mistakes will be made; but it is important for the children to know it is okay to make those mistakes. Making mistakes is how we all learn!

Manners play an integral role in any classroom. Simple words such as "Please", "Thank you", and "Excuse me" go a long way in showing respect for others. As teachers, we model this behavior and expect it in return through the students' daily interactions with each other. This caring environment helps each child to grow and thrive.

Patience to Allow Growth to Progress at an Individual Rate:

Preschool students enter school with a wide range of skills. Whether they have an academic skill such as letter and sound recognition or a physical skill such as hopping on one foot, all children progress at their own speed. The Preschool Montessori curriculum will be presented in a manner that will foster each student at their current developmental level. Their brains can absorb so much, yet still need to learn through discovery and manipulation of their learning environment. With each new skill, patience and practice are required to gain confidence and mastery. Encouragement is needed to restore confidence when struggles happen. Similar to the book, "The Little Engine That Could," if you think you can, you will. If you think you can't, you won't. It is our job to teach them they can!! All learning requires positive guidance, time, and encouragement. At The Nativity School we seek to provide that support to all of our students; igniting the spark within while fostering a love for learning.

We welcome you and your child and look forward to a wonderful year together in Preschool!
